‘refuge’ are a 3 piece acoustic band that specialise in live performances on mental health hospital wads.
In 2014 & 2015, they delivered the Art Council funded project ‘Moving InWards’ that involved performing more than 20 workshops over 10 wards throughout Leicester’s NHS hospitals.
The project was mentored by Mark Morriss of 90’s chart topping band: ‘The Bluetones’ and Gaz Birtles of 80’s and 90’s sensation: ‘The Beautiful South’. Mark Morriss continues to mentor the band today on their latest project ‘Within’ that will see the launch of a relaxation and mindfulness album created in collaboration with Claire Evans, a qualified Mindfulness Coach.
The ward work now continues in the older people wards and the feedback from patients, staff and visiting family members continues to be very positive.
“I am very keen for this to continue. It was really refreshing to see such a large majority of the patients engaging in the music session and thoroughly enjoying it and having fun. It encouraged them to all interact together and be harmonious which was lovely to see.”
